The supermarket chain, Aldi, is consulting about a proposal to build a new supermarket in the triangle of land next to the Shell Garage on London Road by the Race Course roundabout. Information about the consultation is available on their consultation website. They have sent leaflets to residents in the area. The land is in Oadby and Wigston.
An immediate concern is that this piece of land is part of the route that the Holbrook takes from Oadby before going under Shanklin Drive and across to Knighton Church Road, where it is culverted before emerging at the back of houses on the western end of Knighton Church Road. It then flows under Carisbrooke Road, where it has flooded a number of times in recent years, causing severe disruption and damage to residents. Anything that reduces the amount of trees and green space, which soak up the water, or that increases run-off, by laying tarmac, is likely to contribute to worse flooding in the future. The location will also add to congestion at a what is already a busy roundabout, especially at rush hour times.
We would encourage residents to respond to the consultation and write to Oadby and Wigston District Council.
A campaign has been started by local people on Shanklin Drive to oppose the proposal. If you would like to support this and be added to the campaign email list for updates, please email shanklindrive@gmail.com

I am concerned about the proposed Aldi by the racecourse roundabout due to the traffic increase and the flood risk. I also do not see the need- there are Aldi’s in both the adjacent districts of Wigston and Aylestone and there are many other nearby supermarkets. Please do not build this Aldi.
I am a resident of Carisbrooke Rd and I very strongly object to the proposal of an aldi store being built. I feel that it would greatly increase the volume of traffic in the area which would obviously also create an impact on the environment and pollution levels. I feel that it would also hugely increase the risks of homes being flooded in the area. We DO NOT need another supermarket!!
Please don’t forget to respond to Aldi themselves. We are just publicising the fact that they have these plans. If it becomes a planning application, it will be Oadby and Wigston District Council making the decision.
Hello all.
A few of us on Shanklin Drive are campaigning against the Aldi proposal. If you would like to support this and be added to the campaign email list for updates, please email shanklindrive@gmail.com
The roundabout is already highly congested and quite dangerous. This would cause a significant increase in the difficulties faced by road users. I’m pro sensible development, but this is a shocker.
Have written to Aldi opposing this development using all the above reasons and more. The site together with the botanic gardens opposite iis an important visual marker between Oadby and Leicester . Inevitable increase in traffic bad in terms of road safety, air quality and climate change! Then there are the flooding issues and the threat yet another large supermarket in the area poses to the survival of Oadby village as a shopping centre and community hub!
Just became aware of this, it seems there is not enough information about this in the public domain – although I tend to not buy the local newspapers. I have to say Aldi is 10m drive to Wigston, and we have M&S, Asda, Sainsburys and Wairose within 1-2miles… (Oh and the Co-Op on London Road). It’s absolutely getting ridiculous and I would be boycotting this site from the start…
I’ve alerted my MP Jon Ashworth and I hope and expect this campaign to get the same amount of public support as when Tesco Express tried their hand in Clarendon Park.. So local residents outside of Knighton please lend your support to this as well. We are all affected….
I am local resident on Knighton Drive and I don’t drive and I think the new Aldi development is a great idea. Currently I am mostly forced to use smaller and more expensive convenience stores and having a major discount supermarket chain on my doorstep would be a great help and I am sure it would also help people struggling and on a budget in the area. I think there is some snobbery here and people wouldn’t be objecting if this was a new Waitrose store. I imagine some extra flood protection could easily be built into the design of the new store. ALDI shops are not that big and I imagine that most of the traffic will be absorbed by London Road, and it is also on a major bus route.
We have made it clear it is nothing to do with it being Aldi, we would be against Harrods being built on that land.
